BHK Vision – Bare Hoof Kauai uses only natural hoof care & trimming practices to promote the growth of a naturally sound hoof while educating people about the benefits of properly maintaining a barefoot, holistically natural lifestyle for their equine companion.
Trimming Rates
Initial trim – $50
Maintenance trims:
Draft – $50
Average horse – $45
Pony, mini, foal (<10 months) & donkey – $40

The Initial Assessment and Set-up Trim usually takes about an hour. Most hooves are somewhat overgrown initially and have a buildup of dead tissue to be removed or shoes that have to be pulled, which makes the first trim the longest and hardest. Unusually overgrown hooves or hooves with severe pathologies will be assessed and charged on an individual basis.

If the set-up trim takes more than an hour, it is because
we are having to train your horse as well as trim! We recommend you handle your horse’s hooves daily, practicing pick-ups on all four feet, picking out the hooves, and doing leg massage to convince your horse s/he loves having her legs handled! If we have to spend significant time training your horse to stand and cooperate, the trimmer will charge for the training time. Dangerously green or aggressive horses will not be considered for trimming – but we will be happy to schedule some time to help you train/prepare your horse. |

Training Fees:
30 minutes of training: $30 60 minutes of training: $60 $60/hour billed in 1/2 hour increments.

Alissa Mayer with Equiloaha Farms - Bare Hoof Kauai Trimming Partner Check out her website: www.equiloha.com or call 310-963-0916 Trims must be maintained on a 4 week schedule. Why? Because while a trim too short will leave a horse foot-sore for a few days, a hoof allowed to overgrow is actually damaging to the integrity of the hoof capsule, and therefore counter to the ultimate goal of keeping horses barefoot – naturally sound rock crunching hooves! Most horses are comfortable on soft footing immediately after the first trim. Some horses are ready to hit the gravel right away! With time and regular trimming, hooves get tougher and tougher. Some horses will need hoof boots to support the hoof structures for riding on rocky or rough footing as they make the transition to barefoot. We are happy to teach owners the fundamentals of rasping a hoof wall, and strongly encourage each horse owner to do a little maintenance pedicure between trims. To your horse’s health! |
